Seoul Viosys and SETi announced that Violeds UV LED technology successfully killed 99.9% of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) within 30 seconds.
According to the news, Seoul Viosys and a research team from Korea University (Korea University) conducted tests using the Violeds compound semiconductor technology that is in mass production.
This study uses Violeds technology to demonstrate the strong germicidal effect of Violeds UV LED light source irradiating the novel coronavirus for 30 seconds. The study also found that if the coronavirus is placed closer to the light source and the irradiation time is prolonged, the sterilization effect will be stronger.
In addition to testing coronaviruses, the research team also demonstrated that the Violeds technology can kill 99.9% of harmful bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Salmonella typhimurium.

What is UV LED？

According to reports, Seoul Viosys and SETi have jointly developed Violeds UV LED technology since 2005. The technology has been used to decontaminate the environment for astronauts on NASA’s space station.
Seoul Viosys pointed out that the widespread commercial application of UV LEDs has been limited because the product cycle is too short for long-term use.
However, since 2019, the new patented technology has extended the previous service life by 50,000 hours, making it the best solution for air purification and water sterilization products at this stage. The company said it will soon offer efficient airborne coronavirus sterilization solutions and surface sterilization solutions for products such as masks and smartphones.
It is understood that at the beginning of last month, Seoul Viosys announced that as the new coronavirus continued to spread globally, the number of customer inquiries for Violeds UV LED products increased by more than five times compared to the previous month.
In addition, the company is already working with a number of automotive companies to evaluate solutions for using UVC LEDs for in-vehicle sterilization.
